"Clear Lake optometrist killed in plane accident" --
"Dr. Allen was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Dec. 15, 1953. He graduated from high school in Lawton, Okla., and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, later graduating from Boston State with a degree in philosophy.
Allen, who lived in Friendswood, received both his optometry degree and a Ph.D in Physiological Optics at the University of California, Berkeley. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Cambridge University in England.
He taught at the University of Houston from 1990 until 1997 and practiced as a private optometrist in Clear Lake, specializing in infant and children's vision care until his recent retirement earlier this year.
He also started and was working at Tropical Sea E, a company which provided continuing education for optometrists in tropical locations. He enjoyed travel and loved scuba diving in the Caribbean.
He is survived by his son Jeremy, his mother Francis Grubbs and his brothers, Marshall and Wayne Grubbs.
The memorial service was held at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home in Friendswood.
